Online Profile

Before interviews or assessments take place, many applications are filtered through online systems and profile screening processes. At this stage, train operators are not trying to identify the “best” candidate - they are narrowing the field to those who meet the role’s expectations.

👉 See our online profile guidance for more information.

CV's

Train operators are not looking for sales language, personality claims, or long personal statements.

Instead, CVs are reviewed for evidence of:

  • alignment with role profile
  • safety responsibility
  • procedural compliance
  • working independently
  • handling pressure and accountability
  • consistency and reliability over time
  • knowledge, skills and behaviours listed in the job description

👉 See our CV Guide for practical CV hints and tips

Interviews

Interviews are structured, evidence-based assessments designed to evaluate whether a candidate demonstrates behaviours aligned with a safety-critical role.

Interviewers are not looking for confident talkers or rehearsed answers. They are assessing how individuals:

  • align with the role profile
  • make decisions under pressure
  • follow rules and procedures
  • communicate clearly
  • reflect on their actions and learning

Most questions focus on real past behaviour, because this provides the most reliable insight into how someone is likely to behave once qualified.

👉 See our Interview Guidance resource for more information.

Psychometric Assessments

Psychometric assessments are a standard part of recruitment across the UK rail industry. They are designed to assess whether an individual’s natural working style aligns with the demands of the role.

These assessments do not measure intelligence or education. Instead, they explore capabilities such as:

  • sustained concentration
  • attention control
  • rule learning and recall
  • decision-making discipline
  • perceptual judgement
  • behavioural judgement

Each assessment reflects a real aspect of the train driver role, from maintaining vigilance during long, quiet sections of route to applying procedures accurately under pressure.

👉 Our Psychometric Assessment Guide explains more about the different types of assessment.
